On 26th November 2009, Hang-Up Pictures, in collaboration with
advertising agency Wieden + Kennedy, is launching the debut solo show
of
Alex Daw,
a multi-talented contemporary artist, at the agency’s new space ‘The
Cole’ situated in The Old Truman Brewery in London’s Brick Lane area.
The exhibition will run until Sunday 29th November.
Alex Daw brings his warped view of the world of fashion,
status and advertising via his ongoing series of compelling
contemporary mementos of modern life. He utilises anything at his
disposal - he cuts and paints on a number of surfaces. Culling
fragments of pop culture, fashion and art history, Daws’ obsessive
nature to critique and de-construct objects, results in cut up
magazines, and paintings on canvas and glass pieces.
The resulting work is a series of sexy, glossy objects, at once
mocking, mimicking and worshipping the cult society they are idolising.
He is also satirising the clinical, surgical lengths to which a growing
number of celebrities take their obsessive compulsion to alter their
physical self.
This collaboration is an opportunity for Hang Up and W+K to create a
‘real-life’ experience, that doesn’t depend on the digital space. As
technology plays a bigger and bigger part in all our lives – both feel
it is just as important culturally to retain some form of aesthetic
tradition by creating and promoting work that exists in the physical
world.
Plus there'll be lot's to drink and eat. Havana Club are sponsoring
the show - there will be enough rum on-site to create 400 cocktails
and caterer extraordinaire Matt Phelps aka
Fun Thyme will be
catering live on site. Yum.
